Thanks for visiting my "site" or what's left of it. Since losing most of my vision to a brain tumor at the age of 11, I've learned to live in two worlds: the world of the sighted and the world of the blind, a form of dual citizenship. While vision isn’t something you have to work at, vision loss is.
Like journalist Malcolm Gladwell, I'm a firm believer in the Ten-Thousand Hour Rule: If you practise something/almost anything for 10,000 hours, you can't help but become accomplished at it. So why not apply the same rule to vision loss? I like to tell people I'm good at being blind- because I am.
So, where does one go to learn about life with vision loss? You can't exactly go up to the first blind person you meet and ask them how they did it because, frankly, not everyone has the capacity to be accomplished at it. So, I’ll volunteer to be your mentor, your tour guide, whether you’re experiencing vision loss yourself, have a friend or family member who is - or are just interested in understanding more about the topic.
I am the author of The Disability Experience: Working Towards Belonging. I have a B.A. and a Master's in Writing from the University of Victoria. I deliver disability-awareness workshops to health-care and education
